Luxury Brands and the Aviation Industry: Wellness, Fashion, Ancillary Revenue and Future Tech Initiatives
As we continue to ride the wave of post-pandemic travel recovery, the travel retail market is projected to soar past $117 billion in global sales by 2030 forbes reports, with an impressive annual growth rate of nearly 10% since 2022. Airports are stepping up their investments in infrastructure to accommodate this increasing traffic and enhance traveler experiences. This evolution presents exciting opportunities for luxury brands to expand their presence in travel retail, shifting the airport experience toward a more premium offering.
European Airports Embrace Luxury
Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, the fourth largest airport in Europe, is leading the charge with a major upgrade to its Lounge 2. This redesign focuses on reimagining the traveler experience by integrating luxury travel retail and premium dining options. As Arthur Reijnhart, executive director of Schiphol Commercial, stated, “The renovation of Lounge 2 is part of a larger plan to make Schiphol attractive to passengers again. We’re enhancing our offerings with tastier and more sustainable food and beverages, as well as high-end shops featuring brands like Louis Vuitton and BVLGARI.” This strategic move not only elevates the airport journey but also aligns with the trend seen across various international airports investing in luxury experiences.
Schiphol isn’t alone in this pursuit; both Rome and Paris airports are ramping up their luxury retail offerings, inspired by examples set by leading hubs in Dubai and Asia. Isabelle Fourmentin, CEO of JCDecaux Airport Paris, noted that luxury brands perfectly complement enhanced infrastructure and premium airport experiences. “The trend started in major Asian hubs like Shanghai and Singapore and has since influenced European airports, which have been gradually renewing their infrastructures to create spacious and inviting stores,” she explained.
Rome’s airport strategy reflects this shift, focusing on luxury retail to not only elevate the airport experience but also capture a lucrative market segment. Gianluca Littarru, Rome airport’s former general manager, emphasized, “We particularly need luxury retail, which is one of the key drivers of growth in the retail business—combining brand narrative with the significant price advantages of the Duty-Free area.”
Digitalization and Engaging Experiences
The continuous improvement in airport infrastructure is creating ample opportunities for luxury brands to engage travelers through digital outlets and interactive shopping experiences. Innovative brand activations are being reimagined to appeal to affluent travelers and reinforce luxury credentials with stunning displays and personalized customer service. A prime example is Bulgari’s new fragrance counter at Rome airport, which offers travelers a unique olfactory journey, complete with specialized services like custom gift-wrapping and pop-up events.
Moreover, luxury brands are increasingly investing in digital marketing activations to enhance the airport experience. With the limited space available, large screens displaying innovative and desirable content have become crucial. Hong Kong Airport, for instance, launched a digital luxury platform that allows travelers to access concierge services and make pre-flight purchases, with deliveries to the gate or home—showcasing how airports can evolve into shopping destinations akin to standalone luxury boutiques.
As Asian airports continue to lead in luxury and digital experiences, we expect more global airports to follow suit, expanding their luxury retail offerings and transforming airports into premium shopping and wellness destinations.
Wellness at the Forefront
In the quest for enhancing passenger experiences, wellness has emerged as a vital component. Virgin Atlantic’s flagship Clubhouse at London Heathrow exemplifies this trend with its chic, mid century modern design and amenities like Peloton bikes, accessible via QR code. Meanwhile, Air France’s light-filled lounge at JFK offers a serene sanctuary, featuring a 323-square-foot spa in partnership with Clarins, where business-class travellers can indulge in complimentary facials.
Travelers today are keen to integrate wellness into their lives, including their airport experiences. As Monty Sharma, president and CEO of Therabody, pointed out, “Travel takes a toll on the body and the mind. Offering wellness spaces for recovery and rejuvenation as part of the travel journey is an excellent idea.” Partnerships, like the one between Therabody and United Airlines, aim to provide a range of wellness amenities, including dedicated “Reset Suites” within Polaris Lounges across the U.S.From pre-flight pampering to energising workouts, airports are stepping up to offer unparalleled wellness options. As we move forward, the integration of luxury brands, innovative technology, and wellness initiatives will redefine the travel experience, making it more enjoyable and memorable for every traveler.
